She was a child.
Born to be on her own.
She stood at the corner of the street.
Thinking about things children shouldn't be thinking about
like stealing the goods from an old vendor across the streetand selling it
just so she could have something to eat
orselling her innocence for a price to a dirty rich man
so she could survive for the week..
or the month, maybe. She was a child.
Born with a will to live.
But that will was slowly taken away from her from the start.
She was found silently screaming with garbage and rats one rainy afternoon at the market.
Her bearer was nowhere to be found.
zAn old man happened to pass by.
The crowd felt relieved that someone was interested to take care of the "trash".
The man took her without a word and then left.
She was a child.
Born to play and live like a child.
But as she grew, she was deprived.
Her toys were brooms and a pail full of suds.
That was the play she knew and grew to love.
She was a child. But old enough to think about what's right and what's wrong.
One night, the man took her to a room full of lights.
She was amazed. That was the first time she saw lights, beautiful lights.
The man throwed her a couple of new clothes and told her to dress up.
She was skeptical, but she felt happy.
That was her first set of new clothes.
She was a child.
It was her 17th birthday.
No one knew exactly when her real birthday was.
They just assumed it was today.
The man told her to dress up immediately.
Her clothes were full of glitters, but not enough to cover her up.
And the man said the show was about to start.
She was a child.
She was excited she could finally see a real show.
She was dying to meet the star and ask her questions she had been wanting to ask ever since.
Stars are really famous, she thought.
Just like the ones she watched at the butcher's old television.
It was her dream of becoming like one.
She was a child.
The man pushed her off the floor.
Amidst the bright lights, she found herself standing at the middle of the howling crowd full of men.
Old, young, rich, poor, educated, respected, some she saw at a campaign, but everyone was looking hungry for something she couldn't explain.
Then a voice from nowhere said:"Now, for the moment we've all been waiting for.
Let us welcome the freshest star of tonight'sshow!"She realized, it was her.
